The procession begins

March 2007

Every year around this time the caterpillar procession begins. These caterpillars migrate between pine trees in the forest and create silky nests at the end of the branches, where they consume the leaves and eventually kill the tree. They are joined nose to tail and processions can be over 10 feet long, as you can see from the photos. Touching them can cause an allergic reaction that can last for a few days. Crossing the road at their speed can be a problem and not many make it to the other side.
